Basically, it just uses the dspam_maintenance.sh script written by Stevan Bajic, which you can find in the source tarball of DSPAM. You can modifiy its behaviour by adjusting the options in /etc/default/dspam (note this only applies for Debian, though other distributions might have adopted the same logic). I won't be able to answer your other questions specific to the hash driver as I do not use it myself, but you have to be aware that it seems there is a problem with it, check the mailing lists archives and the project bug tracker for more information.
