Ok, I suspected it but had no clue on how a text file (purge-pe.sql) could suddenly become an UTF8 file with it's associated BOM. So I slightly modified dspam_maintenance to have a chance to see what was exactly running, and then bingo:

   console1 # /usr/bin/dspam_maintenance --with-sql-autoupdate
   --with-sql-optimization
   console2 # file /tmp/.ds_758_1809
/tmp/.ds_758_1809: UTF-8 Unicode (with BOM) text

I suspect sed or awk to be responsible for this on my system but can't reproduce it on my command line.

So Stevan, if you're listening ...

Regards.
