thanks John.... i think i've seen you around the webdna list? correct?

Yes

and i think it will help me for the gui too after recompiling the
httpd with the imap module...

Remember the suexec won't like vpopmail's UID==79 unless you compile Apache with a lower minimum UID number (I forget the configure argument). At one point, I actually downloaded Apache2 and built it with that option specifically so that I can copy over the suexec to replace my distro's version.

My latest server (late stage testing), I went the other way and made the dspam binary suid, so that all quarantine folders are owned by the dspam user (which I pegged to UID==999, just under the "normal" user accounts). This makes the webui setup simpler.

the thing now is that i switched to --deliver=innocent,spam but i still
haven't gotten anything tagged as spam. which is weird - spamassassin used
to get about 60%. i also did some changes to dspam.conf to write SPAM in
the subject but have not seen any of those. weird....

You have to train dspam before it will tag anything (unlike SpamAssassin which works out of the box). I found that the latest dspam started tagging spam after less than 40 messages (using TUM, if that matters)!
