Kalin,
I may be wrong here, but I believe Preference settings in the dspam.conf only affect new users or users who do not have customized configurations yet. Check the preferences for the user in question and see if that user still is looking to message instead of headers.

To check the [EMAIL PROTECTED] info
# dspam_admin li pref [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Go ahead and post your entire dspam.conf file (minus the passwords) -
it'll be easier to figure this out if we have all of the information at
our hands.
Post it at a site, if you would, and not in the email (personal
preference - I find it easier).

sorry for the delay... here is the config from the log:

./configure --with-storage-driver=mysql_drv --enable-daemon
--with-mysql-includes=/usr/local/include/mysql
--with-mysql-libraries=/usr/local/lib/mysql --enable-virtual-users
--enable-preferences-extension --enable-debug --enable-clamav
--with-dspam-owner=dspam --with-dspam-group=vchkpw

so --enable-preferences-extension is in there.... did i miss domain
level?!

ok.. and here is the conf - pretty standard not much changed yet:
http://el.net/k/dspam.txt

thanks.....
The paste shows both

Preference "spamAction=tag"
and
Preference "spamAction=quarantine"

Try commenting out Preference "spamAction=quarantine"

i did. nothing yet. also i changed earlier
Preference "signatureLocation=headers" # 'message' or 'headers'

to 'headers' from 'message'... it's still printing it in the message. i'm
not running dspam in daemon mode yet so there is nothing to restart...

logs don;t show anything... not sure now....
