see that they directly reference specific libraries which were found, so the errors have nothing to do with missing libraries, as you have suggested. The errors refer to undefined references which are probably changes made between MySQL 4.x and 5.x.
Apart from what John correctly writes, dspam builds fine against the MySQL dev libraries both on RHSA4 (MySQL 4.1.21) and on FC6 (MySQL 5.0.27).
Mostly when you're building stuff like this (e.g Courier authlib, Postfix and a gang of others) the devel packages are necessary. The only main difference between building dspam 3.8.0 on RHAS4 and FC6 (at least) is that different sqlite libs are needed for each version.
As I wrote, I don't know about Slackware, but there is bound to be a gang of people out there using it who've built without problems.
