I see what you're getting at...
If I understand things correctly, it uses mbox style files. Each imap
"directory" or "folder" is a single file containing multiple emails.

Whatever came with Debian Etch; it seems to have no identifying marks.
No version info, nothing on the manpage, strings imapd returns nothing
of interest....
The only thing it says that might be a version is Berkely 4.2 IMAP4rev1
2003.339 - but it still doesn't tell me who/where...
I've tried to figure this out before but it "just works" so I never gave
it much thought.
