Pretty much solved my own problem here, but posting my solution for
prosperity and people searching the archives:
Upon inspection, it appeared that the REMOTE_USER env variable wasn't
being passed to the cgi script, it seems I had to symlink /var/www/
html/.htaccess into /var/www/cgi-bin/ (to clarify, add a symlink in /
var/www/cgi-bin/ called .htaccess pointing to /var/www/html/.htaccess)
The contents of which is:
AuthName "Dspam Control Center"
AuthType Basic
AuthUserFile /var/www/html/.htpasswd
AuthGroupFile /dev/null
require valid-user
satisfy any

I've tried logging in as [EMAIL PROTECTED], domain.com and user, all
set up via a .htpasswd file, the error I get in the browser is:
"An Error Has Occured
The following error occured while trying to process your request:
System Error. I was unable to determine your identity.
If this problem persists, please contact your administrator. "
Anyone know how to rectify this?
