ACTUALLY...  It was opposed by people who thought AUTOMATED operations 
would eat spectrum alive at the cost of ATTENDED operations being 
interfered with.

All Ham stations are "single ops". (Well, you could build a shared 
transmitter, but it would be really really annoying when you and all 
your friends wanted to use it at the same time.)
