I can't speak to its suitability for use with a D-Star gateway, however, I have a Netgear RT314 with an all-metal case which chugs along just fine within 20 feet of my HF, VHF, and UHF antennas (up to 100 watts out on HF and VHF, up to 75 on UHF), while a newer Netgear RT614 with a plastic case flakes out.
