My display on the 92AD goes blank when the battery is very low...

That sounds like a defective unit to me. I've never seen that happen 
on  mine. I've never run the battery all the way down yet but on other 
radios  when the battery gets low the first thing to suffer seems to be 
the  display. Your battery wasn't low, was it?
