Hello Gene,

I don't claim much expertise here, but my understanding is that the low
speed data stream that runs concurrent with digital voice, less forward
error correction is the same stream that carries drats, or d*chat or
dterm. The applications like drats better utilize this stream and add
features. With a simple terminal program you can send lines of text
hither and to over the low speed stream. The applications add function
to the terminal program. This stream starts out at 1200 b/s but some of
this throughput is used for overheads leaving an effective speed of
around 1kb/s. The low speed stream is the same on the IC91, 92, 800,
2820, etc.

This is not the same as the high speed data stream used on 23cm's for
internet connections and networking.

Your mileage may vary and I may be wrong.

Best success, Steve NU5D
