Steve you need to register you call sign with your sys admin group there
locally in order to make a contact across the gateway.

In order to make a local contact you need the your call field set CQCQCQ and
RPT1 field set to your local repeater callsign along with C for 2meter or B for
440 in the 8th position. If your local repeater callsign is less than 7
characters then space over to the 8th position and put in your C or B. Then in
the RPT 2 field put in your local repetaer callsign with the letter G in the
8th position for the gateway.

After all that you should be able to make a local contact even if your not
registered yet.

Be careful because sometime what you hear you may think is a local qso but may
be coming across the gateway because someone has the link connected to either a
reflector or another distance repeater which unless you are registered they
will not be able to hear you across the gateway.

So to test it out find a local dstar user and try a contact with them

I know this may be confusing but it'll get easier. Several yahoo groups have
files in their file section that tell and show examples of how to program a
radio.

73 and good luck
