Take a look at Joe's WSJT page: http://physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/K1JT/ In basic terms WSJT uses simple audio tones and minimal encoding with some FEC (forward error correction). It is designed specifically for the weak signal environ like EME and meteor scatter.
