Dear Chris, May I CAUTION you with extreme reserved breath on your statement here..... EXTREME CAUTION First, congrats on your exploring the uses of the ID-1. You're in for a real treat. Next your statement is also very vague in the beginning of it, makes me think you can use ANY dstar radio to surf the net.... (and I know only the ID-1 is the only one RIGHT NOW, that will do HSMM-DD) with 10,000 plus Dstar USERS, this is definitely a milestone. Now, please be diligent about how you go about using it for INTERNET USE... Your statement also scares the be-jesus out of me... Surf the internet with your iPod touch or Laptop.... FOR FREE. I am not going to strike you with lightning, but think about this for a minute please. SURF FOR FREE. Last time I checked my internet bill, it was around 100.00 a month for internet access in order to have my gateway online, and let alone, 10 people of the 52 REGISTERED USERS help pay for the internet, (there are only 5 of us who have ID-1's to play with locally anyway) do you think your statement is fair to me and all the other ADMINS who provide this for your use? ANYWHERE? What if I come up there and free-load your internet connection? Not very HAM like. Next, JUST because it is D-Star. it does not give you instant First Amendment over PART 97. Rules are rules, and the same goes for Dstar Data on 23cm. Just because you can do things on the Home PC, does not mean you can do it on the DSTAR LINK. Please choose your use wisely! I may not be the first to let you in on this, but there are those of us who will go to great lengths to protect the ability to USE IT NOW. please GOOGLE or search some of the other groups who are using the ID-1 for specific purposes, like the 14657.com group (I think that is it), the one that does the Marine Corp Marathon up in Michigan... Lots of useful information there. I too have the ID-1 Bug, BUT with it comes some powerful stuff that can get you or anyone else into a LOT OF TROUBLE. As the Brit's say... Mind your P's and Q's!
