Jeffrey,

I bought a ID880H at Dayton and have been trying since then to get a GPS to
work with my 880. Funny, I was just going to set down and ask the same email
question!

To all, I cannot get the GPS indicator to flash or stay on steady. I've set
the menu from the screen and via the software program to have the GPS on,
with a GPS or without a GPS connected.

Has ANY of you been able to get YOUR 880 to work with a "third-party GPS
receiver that has an RS-232C output and NEMA data format"??

I have tried the ICOM programming cable with a 9 pin null modem adaptors as
stated on page 73 of the 880 manual. I've tried RF Digitravelers, GARMIN
18s, Garmin 35s, Garmin 45s, Garmin 350s(with the Agularant Serial PIC plug
to 3/32 stereo plug) none work.

I have tried SERIAL GPSs (Byonics GPS2) that work with my Kenwood D7s, D700,
and D710, using the 3/32 stereo plug, I've made a "null modem adaptor" for
the stereo plug that swaps tip and ring, and leaves the sleeve as ground...
none work.

BTW, I understand RS-232C standards, DCD/DTE, pins 2+3, NEMA, RTCM, etc. I
have over 12 GPSs, been doing GPS with APRS and computers since 1992.

WHAT "Third-party GPS" works? and how do you get it to work? I have a ICOM
92 with the GPS mic, and it works fine. ICOM doesn't make a ICOM GPS for the
880 as far as I know.

It has got to be something simple in the menu.

Would like to talk to someone who HAS made it work. I've had enough lectures
on RS-232C "standards, DCD/DTE, NEMA/RTCM, port speeds" from folks who have
not actually done it. I talked to 2-3 guys/gals in the three ICOM booths at
Dayton, that wore the ICOM shirts, had ideas, comments, or lectures, but had
not done it "yet".... "just hook up a 3rd party GPS to the 880 and it will
work".

HELP for Jeffrey and I.

OR maybe this is a broke function of the 880H?

Subject: [ID880H] GPS DATA ISSUES HELP/IDEAS

Hello All,
Anyone ever hook a GPS to this unit and have it running? I bought a GPS 18
"Hockey Puck" and plugged it into the unit and nothing. Here is what I
connected. I have the "OPC-1529R" which is the same cable for programming
the unit correct!? I Have that plugged into the [DATA] plug into the radio.
The other end is a RS232 "DB9" plug and have plugged into a Null Modem
adapter and then into a gender changer which then connects to my GPS 18 GPS.
All powered up from what I can tell. So, how do I check to see if its
working? Only way I figured was to go into the MENU - GPS - GPS.POS - MY POS
and then see if it is displaying any information to my elevation or
anything. All I see are "---" blank lines. Maybe this is normal? My thoughts
it that when you plug a GPS into the radio it will start displaying my GPS
data? I know this GPS is compatible to the 880H since someone else emailed
me telling me that's what they have used and works great!

Do I have to turn something on anything inside the menu's to get it to start
working? Have tried another GPS also without any success. Anyone who might
have suggestions or knows what has to be done please get back to me.

Thanks all

Jeffrey
