There is one problem will Open Source, and that is the possibility that someone
will change something that breaks things for everyone else.

The effect there could be to close down all open source development.

Developing and testing network software is a nightmare, because the effects can
reach far beyond your domain (I have a particular nightmare of a NetBIOS over
IPX type 20 packet generated by a very poor piece of code that opened a buffer
leak in a LAN switch several years ago and knocked out a 5000 user network in
10 minutes).

So, there is a careful balance between code that is freely available and code
that can be modified to break things for other people.

I haven't decided whether I'm going to open-source or just generally release my
software yet - I haven't done anything like enough testing yet.

It is running on one repeater, has a few bugs, but nothing major. I will
release to some Alpha testers first, run it in a very closely monitored state,
and see how it plays with the live network.

So, I'll be following the standard software lifecycle of dev-test,
alpha/pre-production, production.

Yes that will slow things down, but hopefully it'll improve code quality in the
long run.
