In order to do such a thing, you will need to put two magnets of equal
size on the radio, so the head will MATE with them... the space between
the head and connector is just shy more then a 1/4 inch, 
so you will need two magnets that will set the control head out
and allow the cable to transverse in the direction you need it to...
 
I would have preferred a REAR connector, but since you have the
DATA DIN plug and the 1/3" DV DATA plug up there too, guess
the design will be what it is.....
