No we don't, one shouldn't presume to speak for the entire community.
D-PLUS linking has its plusses and minuses, the operator needs to
understand each and choose his methodology as best fits the
circumstances. One could also use repeater routing e.g. UR:/RP5TR B
and at some point we'll get a better design for gateways so that the
update latency is negligible, then user callsign routing is best.
The right way to do this is for the repeater to keep a local "last
heard at" hash table for user callsigns, and use that information to
route calls to a given user callsign -- the "trust server" should be a
backup for locally unknown callsigns. So if I call your callsign and
it is correctly routed to the repeater you are on, then the repeater
you are on notes the repeater I called from and any traffic for me
gets routed back to the repeater I called from. More dynamic and
adaptable than the current "server" based system.
Remember, DPLUS is not a standard feature of the gateway system. One
may have the case where the called (or calling station) is on a
repeater with only the Icom software and no way to do D-PLUS linking.
(Or they may be on a system with D-EXTRA instead of D-PLUS.)
