You mean in an environment where every ham could do it better than every other

Remember, Linux is a copy of Unix and then attempts to copy everything that 
Windows does.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could maintain the gateway software ourselves in an 
opensource environment like many good projects are done (eg: linux :p)

The FLAW is in Icom's production of the gateway software. Not D-Star.
