It all depends on what you are trying to accomplish and how big your local user community is -- a full repeater is the solution if you want ALL of the features of D-STAR, you have a few choices here:

1 - Icom repeater and controller, plus gateway - connect to the USTRUST (K5TIT) where most gateways and reflectors are located. Full featured. 2 - Software GMSK repeater, plus free software to attach to the multi- trust gateway network (Yahoo! Group pcrepeatercontroller and http://www.multi-trustnetwork.net/) Full featured, but only a few gateways to talk to (politics). 3 - Hardware GMSK repeater (uses same board as hotspot - see http://enicomms.com ), software and trust as in option in 2. Full featured, but only a few gateways to talk to (politics).

If it is you and a couple of friends around town and don't care about full features.

1 - Hotspot with the GMSK board simplex (Uses DPLUS network with the USTRUST gateways and reflectors) 2 - Hotspot with the GMSK board attached to full repeater (disc, ptt, modulator), with all of the usual repeater components such as duplexer, etc.
3 - Equivalent software for the multi-trust network

If it is just you:

1 - Hotspot
2 - Multi-trust equivalent
3 - DVAR (low power for around the house/neighborhood)

All of the above still require you to buy a D-STAR capable radio to talk on the network.

- or -

The DV Dongle.

Where are you in Montana?

Just wondering if you have considered the HOT SPOT as your first attempt with D-STAR?. It will allow you to bring DSTAR into your area for the cost of one analog 9600baud capable radio and 110.00 for a HOT SPOT board to interface the radio to the internet. Sure cheaper than trying to get the large investment required for an ICOM unit when not many folks own D-STAR equipment,

I am doing some research on DSTAR possibilities here in Montana. Does anyone have an actual map that is current with all the DSTAR sites whether they gateways or repeaters or such in North America? Any help would be appreciated.
