I want to build such a repeater when it becomes available.

I agree with Donald. There are now some great non-ICOM ways to put up a
repeater.

And according to http://g4ulf.blogspot.com/ G4ULF's work to provide us with
a fully G2 compatible repeater gateway will be released relatively soon.
When connected into the US Trust network, it looks the same as an ICOM G2
gateway, and it supports callsign routing for those who want that.

It was made to run on the same platform ICOM recommends for their repeater
software -- CentOS -- the free version of Red Hat Enterprise linux. You can
add in other applications like DPlus without modification.

While this may be overkill for home users who basically only need a full
duplex "hotspot," it will offer a powerful non-ICOM alternative for clubs
and major D-Star repeaters.

With whats out there, I don't see how you need to go with Icom anymore. The
only thing that the ICOM systems give you (which might be a big thing for
some) is the paging, where you put the specific call you want to talk to so
that it looks for that person anywhere in the world, but if that's not a
nessesity to you then you can have a 440 D-Star repeater for under $500!

Our experience here in Northern Ohio, where we have a new repeater sponsored
by a newly formed group (N.O.D.I.G.), was that Icom is no longer giving
modules away. We tried to get one and were denied. So, we went with a
Satoshi board. We had even offered to guarantee the purchase of a certain
number of D-STAR radios but that did not change their minds.
