Going in to the most recent releases, we've actually added some providers. These should hit build 111, so I don't think they're there in 109 (assuming that's what you have), but I'm not sure when it went in. It should give you quite a bit more functionality than was available previously, but the blogs from 2005(!) may no longer apply.

I think the best thing to to do would be to list what the php provider gives you, and then work from there. I'm sure Sriram or others can help on the webstack-discuss list too.
