Caterpillar warns that profit in 2009 will be under severe pressure and says it is cutting jobs to reduce costs in the face of what it predicted would be the weakest year for economic growth since the end of World War Two. Retailers are slashing costs and shedding staff in a bid to protect profits, but are walking a fine line as they seek to save money without damaging their growth prospects.
