I am sure one of the redhat guys can explain a lot better, but with my
experience  in Enterprise Linux (SuSE) you are not allowed to compile
your own kernel, and should you make any changes to the kernel then
you are no longer eligible for support from Novell, the same was true
back in the SuSE days.

As longer as you back everything up you can restore back to the previous kernel.
