Sharjah: Police have arrested a 15-member gang for tapping into international phone lines.

The Asian gang, ages 20 to 25, are accused of using electronic technology to tap into Etisalat's system and making overseas phone calls. It is claimed they programmed electronic appliances used in tapping phone lines from their homes in Khor Fakkan.

Sharjah police received a report from Etisalat saying some people were using their international network illegally by using prohibited appliances and receivers programmed to allow them to make long distances phone calls at very low cost in violation of UAE law.

Police pinpointed seven houses as well as an electrical shop and arrested the gang. Police said the suspects were charged with making international phone calls illegally and possessing and selling appliances unlicensed by Etisalat.

They were also charged with pursuing an illegal profession and using houses for purposes other than that specified by the authority.

Lieutenant Colonel Saif Mohammad Al Ziri, Director-General of Sharjah's Eastern Area said there were gangs that specialised in various kinds of crime, from theft to electronic crime. He said there was also an increase in crime such as tapping into the Etisalat system.
