Well, I've gone and done it..

10 years as a hard core Debian user is over! (Well, not really.. just tainted)

I went and bought a new Sony Vaio VGN-TX27GP ultra-lite laptop, and decided it might be time to
investigate some of these new-fangled distributions.. you know, the ones with an integrated desktop
that has a cut'n'paste that actually works, and mime-types that are registered and all that..
Not wanting to stray too far away from God's own Distro, I grabbed a late beta of Ubuntu Dapper
Drake and loaded it up..

Well, the power management works out of the box, as does wifi and bluetooth.. I've got a quirk or
two with the volume management as this machine has separate volume controls for headset and
speakers, no auto switching.. and I can't get the hardware volume buttons to to work... there are a
few other minor things.. but colour me impressed..

Ubuntu's configuration of Gnome is just brilliant.. makes it dead easy to use.. and is nicely put
together..
I tried to install Kubuntu to test that, but I've not heard good things about it.. but it just kept
locking up before it installed the bootloader..

I get a solid 5 hours battery out of this machine on wireless, and 6 if I have wifi turned off..
going to grab an extended battery for it for those long plane flights..

I did do a bare debian etch install and configured it up with windowmaker (which is what I'm used
to), but the amount of fiddling required to get everything working was such I just went back to
ubuntu.. it "just works".. neato..

Happy as a pig in poo!
