Hi John,

Here's my perspective of this if it helps....
1. "Push" email, including in the case of blackberry's is not an ability 
which is handset dependent. It has to do with the network and email 
architecture. The real "magic of push" is in the polling server.
2. Even the ability for a phone to run an email program is not an issue 
since you can always poll an email server and "push" the email via an 
SMS gateway. I know of atleast 2 such implementations on a personal 
level and I know there are multiple more specially for network/server 
down status updates.

Last I spoke to blackberry they were still looking into integrating 
their server with a possible open source MTA such as 
sendmail/exim/postfix etc. Not sure of the status currently.

I can do a 4-5 slide talk on how blackberry works in the next lug 
meeting if 1) the topic is appropriate (considering its not open 
source), 2)my work allows me to attend the next meeting.
