Now you are talking personal experience stuff..
All my budget laptops have been acer.. and they've all rocked..

the issue you will have is on all the budget laptops the battery life is lucky
to go past 2 hours..
you need to get the big $$ machines to get the battery life I've found..

Just make sure you get a centrino and not a celeron-M. Minimum 512MB of ram..
bluetooth built in
will likely push you into the next price bracket, but a teeny weeny bluetooth
dongle is pretty cheap
these days.. almost all centrino machines have the ipw2200 wifi built in which
works a treat with
any modern kernel.

Your budget is a little low.. but you might find something..
Something I've *always* done (except this time as I've been unable to get an
extended warranty on
this sony) is bought a machine with a three year wty, or managed to get an
extended warranty for
it.. Most of my machines have died or broken in that three years and I've
managed to get it
fixed/replaced under warranty.

I've had Acer, Compaq, Sharp (don't touch with a 10 foot pole), HP, Mitac,
Gateway, Acer and now
Sony.. the Acers have just consistently been the best value for money, although
I believe the new
HP's give them a good run for the $$. They are not the lightest around, but
seem to last well as my
mate who just poured a glass of water into his can testify.. He pulled the
battery out, left the
machine out in the sun for 2 days to dry out (australian sun, not Dubai sun..
an hour would cook it
here) and it's back up and running..

Best of luck :)
