Dear friends, These are the kinds of issues that we should raise our voice against. They are taking shelter under the constitution of symbolic insititutions such as TRA (Telecom Regulatory Authority). Etisalat is no longer a monopoly, they would claim as they have "du" the other provider.
The point is, as of now etisalat charges exhorbitant rates for their services from the mostly expats community who toil and contribute, in no small measure, to much of the UAE's GDP. By international standards, they are doing extortion from the public. This kind of taxing is prevalent in areas such as rent, water/electricity, Municipality Parking, Police Fines etc. In this particular instance, it is much more than money. Even when a technology is available for the benefit of the general public, an institution is autocratically taking away the benefit. It only reinforces the image of the rogue regimes. History tells us of instances where information blocked to the public, serves only the rulers. We should send home an informed message to those in powers that we are not living the past that they are all used to. The younger generation has made all these techmologies possible not to serve the interests of a few Governments that stifle the very freedom. People are central to any policy formulation and Freedom to communicate is their undisputed right. I hope etisalat and the powers that be understand the writings on the wall and act judiciously in this matter.
