Second that question..
pgrep fetchmail is a good one also, it'll just give you the pid if it's 
running, and no output if 
it's dead.

This is most important of all..

Just as an aside.. Fetchmail is spawn of the devil. I've used it for years on 
all sorts of dodgy 
domain based applications and it's one app I was never sorry to see the back of.

When it works, it works very well, but when it has a configuration problem it 
can send your mail 
system into loops of death, spewing mail loops and bulk amounts of the wrong 
mail into all sorts of 
places you never thought possible. Best of luck :)
