G'day Nutters,

I've just started playing with DD-WRT, and I *love* it.

Got a Linksys WAP54GL from Carrefour (~250Dhs) and a Buffalo WHS-G54s from DG's
(~249DHS).

The Linksys sits under a desk on site and punches a hole through the corporate
firewall (shhhhhh!)
using OpenVPN to give me transparent access to my network at home, and the
Buffalo has been fitted
with a 1GB miniSD card to give it some local storage for me to play with.

All in all great little fun linux machines to experiment with! Highly
recommended if you have some
$$ to play with and the desire to do something fun. With the SD/MMC mod
providing extra local
storage you can pretty much turn them into a fully fledged linux box with a
200Mhz MIPS processor
and 16MB of Ram. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Both boxes have a WAN port and a 4 port switch built in, and with the linksys
at least you can
re-assign the lan ports to different VLAN's for more flexibility (have not
tried with the Buffalo
yet), in addition to being able to run virtually separate wireless networks in
parallel over the
same radio. They work in client mode (hook into your neighbours WIFI, and will
also run most common
mesh software and WDS.

Cheap fun with a bit of power and flexibility behind it.

The SD mod is a little tricky if you are not a dab hand with a soldering iron
and a dremel, but not
terribly difficult to achieve. I finished the Buffalo router last night, but
the Linksys has been
running for a week now.
