Hi folks,

I had been content with my old 19" LCD for a long while. But due to
all the 1080i hype, I decided to go for a larger LCD as described due
to 1080i HD. Initially things looked very sane to me and I was very
happy the quality of the video on it through the DVI port from a
nVidia 9600 graphics card.

Recently, I had to make some changes to my entire setup and start from
afresh (a complete Linux installation). Well, I popped in the Ubuntu
8.04 CD as usual and watched it bootup. Initially things looked very
sane and the distro installed completely and perfectly well enough.
After a while I was getting things set up to my taste, suddenly things
started to go amok, ie the display would go completely black. It
looked like a real weird thing to me, wondering what it would be:
trying all sorts of things to find what could be possibly wrong.

Initially, i tried to get into a console by pressing Ctrl + Alt + F2.
Well this worked and i got a console, switching back to X with Ctrl +
Alt +F7 also worked fine. Now, this became a regular incident, but
rather quite randomly, sometimes it would be 15 mins, sometimes thrice
in a minute. Eventually, I was lost once again.

I thought of doing some tests to ascertain the root cause:

Initially I connected the DVI cable to the HDMI output of my laptop,
Oh well there it works perfectly (I was a bit relieved, on the
thoughts that if I rushed to the store back with the monitor, I
would've made myself look like a complete idiot). I tried rebooting
the laptop, as a simple thought came over me. On reboot of the Windows
on the laptop, there was nothing on the monitor, just plain black it
was. While i wondered what it could be, the laptop booted up and
landed at the login prompt, where the monitor suddenly sprang to life.

What the heck, i thought. I tried again on my Ubuntu testbox to check
whether there would be any change in the situation by any chance, but
unfortunately no such luck. The monitor was completely black while
even through the BIOS stages.

That said, I thought I will try the analog input. I connected the
analog input to the graphics card and there comes the display, though
it looked a bit blurred (due to wide screen stretching) unlike the
digital input.

Another weird thing that i found: I couldn't even get the Menu on the
monitor to come up without a signal. i thought probably it could be
due to some setting in the monitor menu. Eventually I Reset the
monitor settings back to factory defaults and tried again. But the
results still remains the same. DVI input likes some signals only,
while Analog signal works though it is not appreciable on such a
monitor as it defeats the purpose of having such a monitor. I have
been now searching what it could be be reading the manuals and any
comments on the Internet, but there seems to be no avail. Has someone
come across such an issue ?

Manu
