I have a receiver (without the controller) which played fine when I first got it but now the left hand channel is playing up. The symptom is that on very quiet passages of music it will cut in and out again. Once the music gets louder it gets better.
I seem to remember the classic had a similar issue that was due to a particular component that was prone to failure.
