Sure, you can, otherwise it would give you an error. What is the reason
to not install SuperLU? You can get packages for Debian and openSuse and
the manual installation is not so hard with the manual on the Dune homepage.

BiCGSTAB did not converge, probably because the condition number of the
matrix was to high. That's why the time step was reduced. Should be fine.
Maybe you can tweak the AMG parameters to improve its performance but I
am not an AMG expert and cannot give you a more precise advice.
