You know, I consider myself somewhat a student of Internet and specifically
list culture and I've watched with interest a few lists self destruct. It
seems that one way to kill a list is having unthoughtful, off topic, poorly
composed messages. This road can be taken for quite a while. The thing I've
seen take a list down the fastest is the flame wars between the offenders
and the offendees. A good list (Like to old Semper list for Mac developers)
can work its way into nothing fast.
This is why I prefer having 15 reasonably specific smaller lists (under 1000
subscribers) to one or two general huge lists. It keeps the margin of error
much smaller. We saw The Patriot last night, he said "Aim small, Miss
small." Makes a lot of sense!
(Of course I will follow this shortly with the announcement of two new lists
that are more general than I have ever done in HomeMac and BusinessMac but
oh well!)
When you think about it, poor quoting breaks only one rule of poor quoting.
Responding on the list to the poor quoting is both off topic (Rule #1) and
also usually is speaking negatively of other list members (Rule #2) so one
could contend that the on list comment is worse than the original offense.
Anyway, I'm not intending to slap any hands, just thinking out loud. DuoList
is one of my oldest lists with over 12,000 messages in 2 years with hardly a
single significant problem. I'm really proud of the community you have all
built and we have a great example of the good things that can happen on the
Internet.
