well now i got it to boot, but it won't mount CDs in the CDRom drive that it had just booted from for the OS 8 installation. it does see the CDRom drive in Drive Setup, forgot to check the System Profiler. i did the easy installation of OS 8 only, from a universal OS 8 CD.
