I'm on 9.0.4 now, but I VERY Happily and stabily (not a word, I know), ran AP 1.2 on OS 8.6. Use all the files in the Tome Viewer, a.k.a. the new control strip and Open transport, and make sure to remove old versions. OS 8.6 used the six-extension version of OT, and the AirPort 1.2 comes with the new 2-extension version.
