I, too have a 2300c and an E-machines etherdock. The drivers that came with
the dock will not install under system 8.x. (and shouldn't be used with 8.x)
However, I installed 8.5 and upgraded to 8.6 and it KINDA works. So far,
from what I can tell, appletalk freezes the machine. It starts up fine, but
the minute that I try to copy a file (except for very small text files) it
freezes the machine solid, mouse will not move. However, if I leave
Appletalk set to Modem port, I can surf the net just fine. one wierd thing,
though: I had already FTPed various files from the net, whne I tried to FTP
from a local WinNT machine that is on my local subnet. That also froze the
machine, just like Appletalk. (BTW I was using the same NT machine as an
appletalk server). Anyway, the only thing I can figure is that there are
problems with the local subnet when using the dock. But, that doesn't really
make full sense.
I am not certain about external video, but the documentation states that you
shouldn't use the apple video mirroring software. I dunno. It worked fine
for me, but I can't say if it was contributing to my crashes. I don't think
so. (I was using it with an external monitor, in normal mode, NOT mirrored)
My best advice is to try and install 8.6 (assuming you have more than 32MB
of RAM) and make sure that the dock is attached to the machine when you do
the install, so the installer can detect anything on the dock. This might
actually not have any effect, but it can't hurt...Please let us know if you
have any breakthroughs.
