I had a similar experience, but stumbled across something that works for me. I've found that if I hit the power key but without holding down 'c'(but with the boot CD in the drive) , then open the CD drive by hitting the open button (closing it quickly manually again) then reach over and push down the 'c' key, I can get the system to boot up from the CD. I admit, you have to move pretty quick. But if I hold down the 'c' key before poweron, my system goes straight to the harddrive. I'd try to startup by pressing the 'c' key late (i.e after hitting the power key), but I've grown superstitious about the opening/closing the CD drive process, it's sort of like knocking wood, I don't want to mess with it.
