Colin,
OS 9 and OS X (why can't they just say 10 ?) are worlds apart. 9 remains
a bit flaky -- perhaps 9.1 will address those issues. 10 is fast,
reliable (at least hard as hell to crash) and from what little I've
played with it, dang near what they've promised. Aqua needs some
brushup, but they've got months to go before GM (Golden Master).
The big thing for our hosting business is stability... and 9 does have
its hiccups. "X" will prove to be a whole new experience to folks who
stresst their machines to the max or crash now. Apple has done a
remarkable job -- considering that we were promised Copland (remember
that), and five years later we are actually getting it. How long ago
were Windows people promised a RISC chip and where is THAT? NT users
will soon have two less items to gloat over : protected memory and true
multitasking.
Personally, 9 is far from perfect. Better than 8.x in a lot of regards,
but from a business perspective, still has some important flaws to
overcome. However, your comments about "X" on an existing upgrade card
are probably right on the mark.
Cheers,
paul
