My reply also includes a shameless plug (to come) but I will be honest.
I have owned a 280c and have a 2300. I prefer the 2300. In terms of speed
the 2300 isn't that much faster than a 280. It is however more versatile
because it is compatible with all applications requiring a PowerPC.
That was the main reason I purchased the 2300. I mostly use it for MS
Internet Explorer 5 and Outlook Express 5 which both require a PPC. I also
use Appleworks 5, Office 98 and a few other applications. Most importantly I
have the Palm Desktop PIM software which requires the PPC (a wonderful
application even without a Palm Pilot). I keep track of my schedules and
sync with my Palm.
You can also add a larger hard for more storage at a reasonable cost. It has
the largest screen at 9.5" and it has a trackpad which I prefer.
If you find any Duo with a built in modem they're great for email saving you
from dragging an external modem around. I was also able to use a Supra
Express 56k modem on both my 280c and 2300 without problems.
While the MiniDock allows you to hook up a lot of goodies you can also hook
up a keyboard and mouse with the Floppy MicroDock. It has an ADB port. It is
more easily transported than the MiniDock. This is nice if you need to do a
lot of typing as the Duo keyboard can get a bit cramped because of it's
compact size.
The MiniDock is nice for setting up at a fixed location. I have mine at work
so all I have to do is plug it in and boot. I use the location manager to
switch between setting for work and home which is where I have my DuoDock. I
have a neat little Asante Adapter to provide ethernet on my MiniDock.
One important note. If you look at older models make sure they have a good
keyboard. Hopefully upgraded to a Revision F (standard on 2300).
Now for the shameless plug. I just happen to have my Duo 2300 with the works
still for sale (planning to buy a 1400c). It includes a load of great
hardware for only $450 plus shipping. If your interested email me off list.
See details below.

from the MiniDock's ADB port. Latest driver is working great with OS8.6

It's running Mac OS8.6. I have MS Office 98 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and

FWB CD-ROM Toolkit, Fax STF, IE 5, Outlook 5, Palm Desktop, and some other

I'm asking $450 (firm) for the whole kit-n-kaboodle (plus shipping). It's
all in excellent condition. I want to sell it complete. I think it's a fair
price.
