Oh Dam I just had that same problem with earthlink. Did you try the wizard to check configuration? Mine says Freeppp setup also, version 2.5v2 Your tcp/ip settings should say connect via FreePPP, Configure using PPP server, IP Subnet and router all should say will be supplied by server, you should also have at least 2 name server address (example xxx.xxx.xxx.xx and xxx.xxx.xx.xx)the x's being server address numbers, search domain should say earthlink.net FreePPP General Allow application to open connection checked disconnect if idle unchecked check line unchecked show alerts unchecked on connect checked open application on connect unchecked Accounts eln_mgkmail (example) phone number connect directly user name ELN/mgkmail password Connection Port speed 230400 flow control (Mine says CTS only) Modem string (This should be set on your first connect when you do set up! If GV setting does not work try Hayes Basic or Error correcting.) My string is AT&F&Q5 but that for an internal Express Modem. Options Domain - Not used Primary DNS - Me either Secondary DNS - Ditto IP address assigned by PPP server Location Leave them all alone and blank except location name unless you have special dialing! Control panel under modem Connect Via Yours should say modem/printer port not internal Apple talk should be OFF with nothing using the port! BY the way somewhere I forget where when you are setting up your account it will dial in and get your account information the continue with set up. At modem set up Do not change your modem or settings, if you noticed it has an option to use the settings during account setup connection. It's best not to change it since you had the right connection on auto detect to begin with. Do you have PPP installed also? I have both and they both work. You can also try using the GV Platinum/Gold II setting for you modem! AND the big one check your phone line for static and connection's of all the plugs to make sure they seat well and are not loose. And check the contacts to make sure your using a newer 4 wire phone cord and not an older 2 wire, look at the end some older wire have only 2 coppers while the newer lines have 4 coppers. (wire contacts) Dial the number your computer dials and listen to see what happens when it connects, are you getting a fax type sound or static? Does it ring or just buzz? Also try to get a different dial up number that may help.... I only use the modem out of town since I have the Dock tapped in my home Network using the DSL. If all else fail re-install your earthlink it should reload the FreePPP software (You do have Open Transport don't you 1.0 or higher?) Brandy -----Original Message----- From: Duo/2400 List [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, October 04, 2000 9:46 PM To: Duo/2400 List Subject: [Duo2400] help getting my 2300 on-line (part 2) Thanks to everyone who chimed in to my first post in getting my 2300 on-line. After some serious digging around, (lots of stuff on this machine) I was able to locate FreePPP (version 2.5) and my TCP control panel, (1.1.2) and set them up to what I thought was the correct settings for dialing into my Earthlink account. (For some reason, FreePPP is named FreePPPSetup on my machine -- does that matter?) The result...much closer from where I was, but now, I'm not making that final connection. The GV modem dials OK, I get a baud rate, then "logging on"...but the final step doesn't take place. I now get the error message: "A connection as established but is not a reliable connection and was terminated." I tried to connect several more times and each time get the same error message. What's going on now? TCP settings are... connect via: FreePPP Configure: using PPP server Additional search domais: earthlink.net As for FreePPP Setup... Modem setup: connected to Printer-Modem Port modem init string settings: autodetect init string Accounts: local Earthlink phone number connect: directly Earthlink user name & password Connection: Port Speed: 57600 bps Flow Control: CTS & RTS (DTR) Options: Domain name: I'm not used (seriously!) Primary DNS: Me either Secondary DNS: Ditto IP address: assigned by PPP server Awaiting your expertise... MGK FYI --Laurent is correct in that the current versions of Remote Access do indeed dialup and establish a PPP session. It's what I use on my iMac and I thought I could use the same thing on my 2300, which is why I went there first. ---------- Duo/2400 List, The friendliest place on the Net!
