Here are your first clues: often, what is blown is a $5 fuse on one of
the boards, or a collection of capacitors. It is having the ability to
replace those fuses (and having the fuses :) ) that you are paying for.
Depends entirely on mode of failure, of course. DT and Brian have
figured out a lot of the failure points -- also including the thermal
transfer problems the list has discussed before. Marc also brought up
what should become obvious: there may be fit tolerance issues with the
newer upgrade cards working loose, another cause of green-light-of-death.
After Hours has done the same types of repairs on dozens of 2400s (so I
know a think or two about which I pontificate :) ) -- but we are not
advertising as much due to the demands of the webhosting on us. If only
there was a replacement for the 2400. Hell, I'm even thinking of selling
my 3400 for an iBook to frankenstein into a brushed metal case.
