Have you set up Users & Groups?
Have you "shared" the drive on each machine?
Use your online Apple Help to learn more about it ("Help" in the menu bar).
I suspect you need to share the drive. Assuming your running OS8.x you
select the drive's icon; get info; choose sharing from the pop-up menu.
At the bottom where it says "Everyone" click on the button to the right and
select "Read & Write". Close window. "Everyone" allows anyone to log on to
your machine.
Then from the other computer go to Chooser and find the Mac you just set the
sharing privileges on and log on as a GUEST. This way you don't have to
worry about passwords.
AppleTalk should be on on the machine doing the sharing of course.
