Hi folks.

It's me again, the guy that seems to always need help...

I've been quiet, since after my last adventure, where I somehow damaged
my newly acquired 280c, I was pondering what I should do next. It seems
that my experience as a Duo repairman/technician is slowly increasing,
but at a somehow expensive price...

So, what I did was to bid on a slightly damaged 2300c on eBay. Won it,
$177, not too bad, considering the prices that were paid recently for a
2300c. Received it yesterday. It was working, but was obviously damaged
on the right side by maybe a fall. The screen was loose on the right
side, and the display cable was obviously damaged, as the picture was
not always coming, and would go away easily. It had lost its 2 feet, and
I later realized that the case stiffener was damaged on the right side,
since the little part that has the threads for the screw, that sticks
out of the stiffener, was missing. No big deal, I thought, since I was
sure I could use my 280c case stiffener. But, other than that,
everything was working very well.

So, I brought back the little puppy and started working on it. The thing
I initially planned was to simply swap the screens between my dead 280c
and this new 2300c. But, after seeing how much larger the 2300 screen
was, I decided to try to save it. So, my first idea was to swap the
display cables. Unfortunately, as I found out, the cable, even though
they almost fit and seem very similar, they're not the same. After
powering up the 2300c, I quickly detected some smoke from the cable and
saw a few wires in it starting to burn. No need to mention that I
quickly unplugged the computer.

I've then decided to see if I could somehow manage to get the broken
cable to work until I would be able to get a new one. That was a no go.
Not only that, but after trying to find where was the damage, and trying
to twist it a bit, I think I did damage it even more. Now, the screen
light, but no sound are coming, and I'm no longer able to get any
picture, even with screwed up colors like it did before. Bah, it was
already damaged, so, not a big loss.

Then, I decided I would go back to my now "B" plan: swap the 280c screen
onto the 2300c. Like I said, when I tried to fit the display cable from
the 280c screen onto the 2300c screen, I had some problem fitting what
appear to be some grounding in the screen's screws. When I did remove
it, one of the grounding end did break. On the top of that, you need to
remember that the cable was somehow "toasted" when I tried to use it
with the 2300c screen. Anyway, that didn't work. The screen would come
on, but then I was able to see somekind of a black "cloud" coming from
the top right corner that would cover the entire screen after a few
seconds. That was it for my 2 plans: repairing the 2300c screen, or
swapping my 280c screen onto it. The 2300c screen failure was to be
expected, since the seller clearly stated it. I could have had the 280c
screen easily installed, if I had decided not to salvage the 2300
screen, but what is done cannot be undone...

Oh, I alse discovered that my MiniDock seems to have suffer substantial
damage from the short I accidently did last week. Before opening the
2300c, I tried to hook it up to the MiniDock, but when turning the 2300c
on, I would hear the usual chime, followed by a failed hardware sound.
So, that short did cost me a lot.

And so, I'm there, sitting, waiting for a new 2300c screen display cable
to arrive tomorrow, poundering about what I should do. I guess I'm kinda
looking for some encouragements from this list. I did invest so far
close to $500, and I haven't yet a working computer. But, in the end, if
I can get that 2300 working, I think I'll be happy.

If you have any suggestion, beside some sarcasms, let me know. If you
have any encouragements, they're also welcome. I won't leave this list,
so I will have soon a working Duo!

-Laurent.
