It's not really a question of height, but of screw hole placement and
the point in time at which the standard changed. The newest drive
you're likely to find with the screws in the middle (like the stock
2300 or 2400 drive) is around 2GB capacity, 12mm height. All three
heights of drive are still built and sold in large capacities, but
all now have the screws placed at the ends, regardless of height.
Since there's 17mm clearance in the 2300 and the bracket adapters
take up to 5mm, the tallest drive you can use is 12mm, but any
shorter drive (~9mm) will also fit.
By contrast, the 2400 has mount holes on the PCB board for both screw
placement standards, so any drive works fine (as long as it's 12.5mm,
the proper height for good contact with the heat pad on the bottom).
I happen to have an IBM Travelstar 6GB 12.5mm (screws go at ends)
drive that I could sell if anyone on the list wants it. I bought it
some time back on eBay, but haven't used it beyond testing it because
I found a good deal on a 10GB drive soon after. I'd sell it for the
same price I paid, $100 US. Respond off-list if you're interested.
