I have a 280c which was long lasting and bullet proof.
I didn't try to do anything too exotic with it, mainly
word processing and spreadsheets. But I carried it
with me in my briefcase for a lot of miles. Connecting
to the internet with the 28.8 express modem was what
finally made me replace it with a 2400 G3. I never
upgraded the 280c beyond OS 7.something.

The 2400 G3 (NuPowr) worked great. It works great now.
In between I did have a problem when the G3 board
died. Newer Tech replaced it for free after MCE said
it was defective. It took a little while, but I have
nothing but good to say about both MCE and Newer. I
have a bigger hard drive now and the cardbus upgrade.
I use an Farallon ethernet card and a TDK modem card
(seldom used, but it works fine). It runs OS 8.6. I'm
not sure I need the potential brain damage of
upgrading to OS 9.

I have owned a lot of Macs and I think this 2400c is
one of the best machines Apple ever produced. It will
last me (knock on wood) well until after the time I'm
ready to convert to a G4e and a stable, reliable OSX.
My two cents.
