OK, I have a question instead of a trenchant observation or snide remark. ;-) I just received a 280 motherboard I acquired very cheaply intending to install it in a dead 270c I had lying around, with the objective of selling it (although maybe I should just part it out, since I've seen color screens go for more than complete color Duos-- that's another topic). While the logic board arrived with an unadvertised ExpressModem and RAM card attached, it did not have its CPU stiffener. The contact patch on the 270c's original stiffener only covers approximately 50% of the 68040, aligned to one corner. I'm concerned about heat, since the computer feels hotter than I remember the 270c being, although that may be normal. It has been, er, some decades since I studied thermodynamics in detail. My intuition (always a bad thing to rely on when considering physics problems) says that air is such a poor conductor that heat will flow from the part of the chip not in contact with the stiffener to the part that is, and thus into the stiffener, as long as the stiffener's temperature stays lower than the chip's, which seems likely. Does anyone have contrary thoughts or experience? Does anybody have a spare 280 CPU stiffener? I wouldn't care if I were keeping the Duo, but I don't want to sell it if it's likely to fail quickly. I suppose I can find the temperature control strip module and run Techtool Pro on autopilot for a day or so and see how hot the chip gets and compare that to its specs.
