I haven't heard of anyone trying to rebuild a Type I battery yet, and
I'd be interested to hear of your results when you do. Apart from
getting the right batteries, an issue that may come up is the chip in
the battery that identifies the type (and serial number). The Power
Manager is still going to see a Type I, so it may not charge a
higher-capacity battery as well, or at all, particularly if you use
the 2150mAH cells that seem to be available. All the rebuilds I've
heard of so far started with a Type III battery, which is treated
differently by the Power Manager (that's why it requires different
code support in the OS).
If it doesn't work, you can always re-transplant the cells to a Type III case.
