So the problem is related to the extensions and not the desktop file. I went ahead and rebuilt it again though, with techtool and extensions off just to be sure. The icons will not show up on a regular restart but are normal with extensions off. I suspect that some extension has become corrupt, because this same set-up always worked fine before. Now I just need to find out which one - any clues as to what might affect the mapping of icons to applicaitons and data files?
